Tenerife Guide: The Stone Rose
The Stone Rose
Just one of unusual and surprisingly phenomenal small things in Tenerife.
The Stone Rose is located on the La Orotava road to Teide National Park, just beyond Aguamansa, is a cliff face which is shaped like the petals of a rose.
The rose is columnar jointing of a basaltic lava flow and is formed as a lava flow cools and crystallizes into a coherent rock. As it begins to contract, shrinkage of the rock mass results in the development of numerous cracks, called joints.
This lava flow originates from a monogenetic volcano at the head of the Orotava valley, the Montaña de Enmedio, dated as 30,000 years old.
